Overview
This project was conducted as part of a UX Writing Academy course (run by the UX Writing Hub), and involved user research, mockup creation and testing. My fictional concept was a nappy e-commerce site with a focus on laundry care, addressing one of the biggest barriers for parents wanting to go cloth.
My concept: NappyKnack is an online store selling reusable cloth nappies and practical laundry accessories. We understand how daunting ‘going cloth’ can be (hello, dreaded laundry routine!) which is why NappyKnack’s goal is to make things as simple as possible for first-time parents, right from day one. NappyKnack wants to explore the demand for a nappy-care subscription feature enabling parents to receive laundry detergent deliveries, and how best to design this feature.

*If this were a real project, personas beyond the cloth nappy beginner (eg existing cloth nappy users/repeat purchasers) would be explored.

Challenges and limitations
- Only three participants. More data points (10+ tests) are needed in order to draw solid conclusions.
- Testing the entire flow. Sessions were very time-consuming (1-2 hours of discussion). Participants had less to say about the last three screens, and I suspect this had something to do with them running out of energy.
- Unstructured discussions. Participants used fewer post-it notes as the testing went on, instead sharing their thoughts aloud. They also commented on the UI design and business concept, which was helpful but less relevant for this test. Providing a ‘which do you prefer’ poll next to each pair of screens would have provided better quantitative data and given the test more structure, while still inviting discussion.
Next steps
- Recruit more users and run further tests. Include polls for better data collection.
- Focus on high-risk areas, exploring ways to ease cognitive load.
- Emphasise the value of going cloth with information about the financial and environmental benefits, reminding users of why it’s worth the effort.
- Reduce choice overwhelm through product recommendations.
